Blog post

At the beginning of the year, I got invited to sign up to the Fairyloot Romantasy book subscription box. Having been on the waitlist for what felt like the longest time, I was ecstatic!

Although I don’t always have time to read these days, being a new mother leaves very little time for me to indulge in hobbies, receiving a beautiful, special edition romantasy book every month makes me very happy.

So, let’s get into September’s Fairyloot romantasy book unboxing!

What is Fairyloot?

If you don’t know, Fairyloot is a popular book subscription service that offers multiple subscription types based on your preferences. Some example book subscription boxes they offer include, YA book and items or book only, adult book and items or book only, romantasy book only and combination subscriptions. If you’re unsure which type of subscription you think will be right for you, they also have a handy quiz to help you decide. Each subscription type does have a waitlist but I promise the wait is worth it!

What is Romantasy?

Romantasy is a book genre that combines romance and fantasy. If you’re a fan of fantasy elements in books, such as new worlds, kingdoms, magic systems, supernatural creatures, mythology and epic battles,  and you also like a sprinkling, or a shower, of romance with classic tropes, such as enemies-to-lovers, forbidden love, forced proximity or marriage, slow burn, etc, then it’s likely the romantasy genre is for you.

Fairyloot’s Romantasy September 2024 Book

Fairyloot’s September book was The Half King by Melissa Landers. This special edition book featured an exclusive redesigned cover, foil artwork on the hardcover, character art on the endpapers, a sprayed edge, an author letter inside the book, the author’s signature and an extra scene after the epilogue! There’s no denying that Fairyloot treats us well.

Fairyloot Special Edition of The Half King Cover

This book is so beautiful. The front cover design is mysterious in varying shades of purple with gold foil and images of a masquerade mask, city buildings and what looks to be a shadow over a sword.

The back of the book includes more of the city buildings but also a mountain with a short excerpt.

When you take the dust jacket off, you’re treated to a different cover design that looks mystical and magical.

Inside Fairyloot’s Special Edition of The Half King

The artwork inside the book is spectacular. It’s easily the prettiest artwork I’ve seen of the subscription books I’ve received so far. I think it captures the world and the vibe of the book perfectly.

The front endpapers show the main character, Cerise, sitting by a window with a book in her lap.

The back endpaper artwork includes Cerise with, I assume, the young king and romantic interest overlooking the city.

The author’s signature is on the title page of the book.

And the author’s letter to Fairyloot readers is bound just after the signature and talks about her strict, religious upbringing and how writing this book became a cathartic journey for her.

About The Half King

The Half King is said to be a Beauty and the Beast meets the Sandman story and will be publicly released in November 2024.

The story follows Cerise Solon, a second-born daughter who lives in the temple and is destined to live in service to the goddess and become a seer. However, she has no magical gifts at all which has disgraced her family. Despite having no gifts, Cerise is given the opportunity to serve the Half King, a first-born son who rules by day but is cursed to turn to shadow at night. On his 21st birthday, the full force of his curse will occur and he’ll be forever lost to the shadows…unless Cerise can save him.

If you’re part of the Fairyloot Romantasy book subscription let me know what you thought of The Half King! Or, if you don’t have a subscription and are planning on buying the book when it releases. Personally, I think this book sounds amazing and if I ever get a chance to myself again with an 8-month-old baby, I can’t wait to sit down and read it!
